Anglo-Irish poet, satirist and clergyman, Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), was born in Dublin to English parents. He embarked on a career as diplomatic secretary and became increasingly involved in politics. He published many satirical works of verse and prose, including A Tale of a Tub, A Modest Proposal, and Gulliver's Travels. Robert Louis Stevenson is perhaps best-known today for 'Treasure Island' and 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. Howard Pyle (1853 - 1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. Jack London (1876-1916) was a journalist, as well as a prolific and best-selling novelist, best known for his novels The Call of the Wild and White Fang. Rudyard Kipling died in 1936 and is buried in Westminster Abbey.
