Hob lives under the hearthstone at Ghyllside Farm, and only Miss Minkin knows. When everyone else sleeps, they share a bowl of cream, tell tales, sing and dance.

At Christmas time the Hob and Miss Minkin go carol-singing. But to the neighbours their carolling is just caterwauling. When a boot, a jug, a piece of coal and an old mutton bone come hurtling through the air to shut them up, Hob and Miss Minkin are delighted by the generous gifts, and head back to the fireplace to enjoy their booty.
