After serving in the US Army, and working for Yank magazine, Farley put pen to paper and wrote the first of what was to be a 12-book adventure series about a powerful and unpredictable Arabian black stallion and his friendship with one boy, Alec Ramsay. Walter Farley wrote a total of 24 adventure stories involving horses. He died in 1989, leaving four children.
