Vernon Scannell's varied career has included serving in The Gordon Highlanders in World War II and that of a professional boxer. His poetry has been awarded a number of prizes including the Heinemann Award for Literature and Cholmondoley Poetry Prize as well as the Society of Author's Travelling Scholarship. He has published several poetry books and novels for younger readers and has been widely anthologised by Macmillan Children's Books.
