Bernadette Watts was born in Northampton, England, in 1942. She has illustrated over 120 picture books for children, including many traditional tales, in a career spanning several decades. She won the prestigious Japanese Owl Prize for illustration in 1986. She lives in Kent, England. The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, were German professors whose collections of folk tales and fairy tales have been loved for generations. Anthea Bellwas awarded the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize (USA) in 2002 for her translation of W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz . Her many works of translation from French and German (for which she has received several other awards) include the Nicholas books and, with Derek Hockridge, the entire Asterix the Gaul saga by Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.
