Writing apart from the mainstream of nineteenth-century poetry Emily Dickinson created a language of her own, and her work is both very varied and very consistent in its strength and charm. As Ted Hughes says in his introduction, "It is impossible to exhaust the unique art and pleasures of her poetic talent"; for this selection (based entirely on the original texts) he has chosen the pieces he likes best.

Ted Hughes was appointed Poet Laureate in 1994. His many volumes of poetry for adults include HAWK IN THE RAIN, ELMET, and MOORTOWN DIARY, and he has written widely for children, including three collections of stories, the first of which, HOW THE WHALE BECAME & OTHER STORIES, is published simultaneously in Penguin Audiobooks. Dr. Snively has given readings and lectures at the Salem Athenaeum, Marlboro College, University of Louisville, Wesleyan University, the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, the Monadnock Lyceum Lecture series in Peterborough, NH, and elsewhere. A guide at the Emily Dickinson Museum, Snively wrote and narrated the films "Seeing New Englandly," and "My Business is to Sing," produced by Ernest Urvater, in the series "Angles of a Landscape. " She regularly leads discussions on various aspects of Dickinson for the museum's monthly poetry group. Her first novel, The Heart Has Many Doors, about Dickinson's love affair with Judge Otis Phillips Lord, was published in February 2015, by White River Press. She lives in Amherst with her husband, Peter Czap.
