A powerful autobiographical novel told in diary format about a young Russian girl's experiences of World War II. Tania is only thirteen when Russia is invaded by Nazi troops and after enduring months of starvation she is taken from her family and transported to a labour camp in Germany. For three years she labours in the fields and factories of the Third Reich. Tania is helped by her friendships with the other girls and the kindness of some of the German citizens. But she is always haunted by the thought of her mother and sister -- are they still alive? Described simply and movingly -- Tatiana Vassilieva's book pays tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.
