After Harry Potter, then what? Understanding and keeping current with speculative fiction is key to helping teens find books they will enjoy, and to keeping them reading. This guide organizes by genre, subgenre, and theme some 1,400 titles of fantasy, science fiction and paranormal titles, most published within the last decade. Chapters cover such subgenres as epic fantasy, wizardry, romance, and mystery, which are further broken down by subgenres and themes. Annotations offer bibliographic information, brief plot summaries, reading levels, alternative media formats (including large print and Braille), and awards information. Author profiles, programming ideas, lists of The Finest in the Realm for each subgenre, and reproducible lists of Harry Potter read-alikes and Girl Power titles make this a versatile resource. Grades 6-12.

Genreflecting Advisory

"This useful guide should be in every YA collection. It encompasses 13 genres and subgenres included in the term speculative fiction and focuses on in-print titles published in the last 15 years. Each subgenre is clearly defined, and most of the 1400 titles are accompanied by a brief synopsis. Awards for each title are noted. At the end of each section, the author lists exemplary titles. The volume is well indexed, providing access by author, title, subject, and award. A bibliography and webliography point to additional resources. Other features include programming ideas, best titles for book clubs, and those available in A/V formats. Two useful reproducible lists are included: Girl Power and Fine Fantasy for Harry Potter Fans. The author interview in each subgenre is a welcome addition." - AEP

"This new addition to the Genreflecting Advisory Series is the first readers advisory guide devoted to speculative fiction for teens (grades 6-12). Most of the book deals with fantasy, which reflects the current publishing environment....One of the books greatest strengths is the amount of information for each item. Each citation contains the ISBN, additional formats (e.g. audio), awards won, and the age range that is recommended. Annotations are provided for all single titles. Series entries contain a group annotation. Fichtelberg uses the same age ranges: middle school (grades 6-8), junior high (grades 7-9), and senior high (grades 10-12) as Teen Genreflecting. Some adult books are included (and identified with an A) even if they have sexually explicit or violent content....Public, middle and junior high-school, and high-school libraries will find Encountering Enchantment a very useful addition to their reference collections." - Booklist/RA Corner

"Using professional sources and her knowledge of teen reading interests, Fichtelberg selects approximately 1,400 titles from as many different subgenres as possible written for an audience of grades 6-12....Indexes are provided for author, title, subject and award-winning books in this highly useful, well-organized aid for collection development for all libraries with teen collections." - VOYA

"A children's librarian for 19 years and herself a long-term fan of fantasy fiction, Fichtelberg guides readers and librarians through the realms of imagination revealed in works of fantasy, science fiction, and horror that are suitable for grades six through 12. Her topical sections include epic fantasy, the faerie realm, fantasy romance, time travel, and paranormal and horror. A section also looks at graphic novels. Books are cited in all editions, and the plot is summarized. Appendices suggest how to use the fiction in various types of programs." - Reference & Research Book News

"Offers annotations of over 1400 titles aimed at readers in grades six through twelve. Eleven of fourteen chapters focus on fantasy titles, with additional chapters on science fiction, horror, and graphic novels." - Reference & User Services Quarterly
