Sylvia Whitman has written several books for young adults and numerous articles for publications including The Orlando Sentinel, Southern Discourse, The National Culinary Review, and Writer's Digest. She obtained an M. A. in Arab studies from Georgetown University and an M. A. in American studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Foreword author Steven N. Durlauf is professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin and former director of the Economics Program of the Santa Fe Institute. Sylvia Whitman, a writer and educator, has published a slew of articles and a handful of children's history books as well as a picture book, Under the Ramadan Moon. A folklore and mythology major in college, she has always liked proverbs, particularly this one: "A book is a garden carried in the pocket.
