"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is a short story set in a small town that follows an annual ritual known as the lottery. The townspeople gather in the square for the event, which initially appears to be a festive occasion. However, as the story unfolds, tensions rise and the true nature of the lottery is revealed. Each family draws slips of paper, and the ominous purpose of the lottery becomes clear: the selected individual is brutally stoned by the townspeople. This chilling tale explores themes of tradition, conformity, and the dark side of human nature. [Generated by language model - please report any problems].
