This book looks at the changing nature of censorship in the twentieth century, both in democratic countries and under repressive regimes. One of a series, examines the role of censorship in the context of national security both during the war and peace, and deals with issues such as blasphemy, censorship and sex and censorship and the media. The final chapter looks at the future of censorship in the age of the internet. The series, of which this book is a part, looks at some of the major social concerns of the past hundred years, and at how attitudes have changed between 1900 and today. Each subject is examined within a global context and is illustrated with contemporary quotes from personalities and witnesses. The books highlight historic events that marked or caused important shifts in the attitudes of society as a whole.
