This charming childrens book from talented New Zealand author Joy Cowley features an unusually independent heroine - the fierce little red-headed woman. She lives at the end of a very long pier. in a house with a trapdoor through which she fishes for her dinner and jumps into the ocean to swim. The fierce little woman plays a bagpipe and knits socks to sell to sailors with wet feet. and doesnt mind the solitude and the sound of the sea breathing in and out under her door. But one stormy evening a wicked pirate strides down the pier and raps at the fierce little womans window. She has no use for a wicked pirate and threatens him with her knitting needles. bagpipe. and fishing gear.
