This is the third of three design and technology books for 11 to 14-year-old students. The three books, together with accompanying teacher's resources, cover all the requirements of the 1995 Orders for Design and Technology. This title builds on the Red and Green (Y7 and Y8) books and prepares students for GCSE work through 12 imaginative challenges. Each challenge is supported by a number of directed, focused practical tasks, relevant to the activity. These should enable students to learn the making skills and to gain the technical knowledge they need to be successful in each challenge. Assessment criteria are built into each challenge, and questions are raised to challenge the student's views. Case studies show students how what they do is related to similar processes in industry. Skills for designing in Y9 and understandings relevant to production in quantity are explained in a "Making and Manufacturing" section.
