This book tells Leonardo's life story from his childhood near the Italian town of Vinci to his role as 'First Painter, Architect and Mechanic' of France during the reign of King Louis XII. It looks at his investigations into flying machines, submarines, tanks and hundreds of other devices centuries before they were invented. His method of working paved the way for modern science and the book explores the impact this had on world history. The science behind his investigations is explained with interesting diagrams, and quotes from Leonardo and his contemporaries give an insight into this 'Renaissance man's' mind.

This book features the following characters:

Leonardo Da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was a gifted painter, talented musician, and dedicated scientist and inventor, designing flying machines, submarines, and even helicopters. Yet he had a hard time finishing things, a problem anyone can relate to. Only thirteen paintings are known to be his - as for the illustrated encyclopedia he intended to create, all that he left were thousands of disorganised notebook pages. A fascinating man who lived at a fascinating time - Italy during the Renaissance.

'A superb series...These books would be excellent both for a library and for children and teachers to read as part of a science course.' -- TES 20030110 This is an invigorating series... They are full of fascinating thumbnail details - da Vinci's parachute may have looked like a pyramid of cotton, but experiments today have proved it actually works... The authors humanise their subjects with imagined dialogue and the "In their own words" sections are revealing. -- The Daily Telegraph 20030110
