Part of a biographical series which looks at the lives and work of notable men and women and their effect on the world today. The book covers her family background and follows her desire to become a nurse, the problems she encountered, her career before the outbreak of the Crimean War, how she came to go to Scutari and her work in the field hospital which earned her the title "The Lady with the Lamp" and royal recognition and how she continued to fight to reform the army's medical service at home and abroad until her death. The text includes extracts from diaries, letters and quotations from contemporaries, sections on world events of the time, fact finder pages, and significant dates.
