Duncan doesn't mind that he isn_t the best flyer in the aviary but he does mind very much that he is the worst. And when his best friend Daisy tries to boost his confidence by telling the whole class that he is going to win all the prizes on Aerial Sports Day he doesn_t know how he will cope with it all. Soon enough, he is able to fly well but getting back down again is not so easy and poor Duncan is faced with a whole new set of problems. In this short story for young, confident readers, Pippa Goodhart skilfully combines the most magical elements of fantasy with the all-too-real anxieties of a little boy who is just a bit too different from his peers to fit in properly, making Flying Lessons a joyous, gem of a story that will take any youngster's breath away with its touching, home-spun wisdom. -- Susan Harrison
