Mog and Nick travel to Calcutta, in India, the country of their birth and the supposed location of the mysterious Winter diamond. Their family has owned the diamond for generations,and when they learn that a ruthless sea-captain is intending to seek it out and make his fortune, they determine to beat him to it and claim what is rightfully theirs. But when they arrive in Calcutta, they soon learn that the diamond also has far more sinister powers, and as they pursue their quest, the shadowy figure of Damyata is never far away...

Paul Bajoria is a writer and producer for Radio 4. He was born in 1964 to a British mother and an Indian father, and grew up in the North East of England. He took English degrees at Oxford and Toronto universities, and began working for the BBC as a local radio reporter in 1989. He lives in Northumberland with his partner, Jacqui, and their two young children. The City of Spirits is the final book in the trilogy which began with his much acclaimed debut novel, The Printer's Devil, and follows on from the exciting sequel, The God of Mischief.
