"The Ransom of Red Chief" is a humorous short story by O. Henry about two kidnappers, Bill and Sam, who abduct a wealthy man's young son, figuring they can easily collect a ransom. However, the boy, mischievous and full of energy, proves to be more than they bargained for. He enthusiastically embraces his role as a “Red Chief,” turning their plans upside down as he torments them instead of being a frightened captive. As the situation escalates, the kidnappers find themselves in a predicament, leading to an unexpected twist in their plans that highlights the story's irony and humor.
