Norman Hunter (1899-1995) was born near London. After serving in the army in the First World War, he became a copy-writer for various advertising agencies. He was also a conjuror and held the prestigious title of Associate of the Inner Magic Circle. Norman Hunter is most famous for his Professor Branestawm books which he began in 1933. Martin Jarvis, who has adapted the stories in this book for younger readers, first discovered Just William when he was nine years old. He made his first adaptation of a William story for BBC radio in 1973 and since then his broadcast readings have become classics in their own right. Martin is an award-winning actor who has appeared in numerous stage plays, television series and films
