David is a shepherd boy who is sent to watch his father's sheep. He brings them to grazing places and to water, and tries to protect them from the dangers of wolves and vultures. But the smallest one gets lost! David searches and rescues the little sheep from the vultures overhead, and he brings it back to its mother in the flock. Luckily, David is not alone, but God watches over him as David watches over the sheep. As David watches the sheep at night, he begins to sing what will become Psalm 23. The end of the book quotes the text of the entire psalm. Ages 3 and up.
