National Geographic My First Pocket Guides cover a wide range of topics, from animals to constellations, from weather to ecosystems. Each book has approximately 40 entries on the topic, each occupying a spread of the book. Stunning photographs make identification of specimens easy. Beautiful artwork shows the subject in its own environment, and a separate line drawing offers a sketching guide for budding naturalists. Range maps show distribution; bulleted facts offer information about size, color, diet, habitat, etc.; and field notes give additional fun facts and insights. Each spread is packed with information and is lively, colorful, and appealing. An introduction pulls it all together, and a how to use this book section points out all features for ease of use. Dogs & Wild Dogs features 20 wild dogs and 14 domestic dogs from around the world. Dogs are organized from heaviest to smallest and range from the pack-hunting gray wolf to the tiny fennec, and from the powerful Irish wolfhound to the baseballcap sized Chihuahua. Informative and fun profiles describe each dog's characteristics and behavioral traits. Photos and artwork show the dogs in action: bush dogs hunting a giant rodent, Labrador retrievers pulling fish-filled nets in from the sea, and arctic foxes changing color with the seasons.
