Maia Wojciechowska (1927-2002) was born in Warsaw and attended school in Poland, France, and England before coming to America in 1942. She worked as an undercover detective, a motorcycle racer, a translator for Radio Free Europe, and a bullfighter before turning to writing. She won the Newbery Medal for her book Shadow of a Bull.
