A thrilling adventure story with peril, triumph and excitement. Its the story of school children who are negotiating school life, friendships, families and growing up and the characters have been created with Sachars inimitable style and wit. The star of the book though is the fuzzy mud an ecological disaster whose progress and destruction is described cleverly through flashbacks to State Committee inquiries and flash-forwards to disaster hearings, through newspaper and media reports and through an increasingly malevolent series of sums.
