Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, Britain was settled and dominated by pagan Germanic people. Missionaries arrived to convert many to Christianity. Its people survived numerous Viking invasions and internal fighting and finally a single nation emerged. We discover that the Anglo-Saxon period was not a 'dark' time in our history, but one of amazing achievement. The only English King to be called 'Great' lived in these times. Much of our cultural heritage, laws and our language began here. If that isn't enough, we have in recent years unearthed the most stunning buried treasure! The finds at Sutton Hoo represent the finest craftsmanship in Europe at the time.
