Sheila Lavelle was born in Gateshead, County Durham in 1939. She was inspired to write her own stories after becoming a junior school teacher. Her first book, URSULA BEAR, was published in 1977. She went on to write several Ursula Bear adventures, as well as the much-loved MY BEST FIEND series. Lisa Kopper was born in the US and moved to Britain after completing her studies at the University of Carnegie-Melon, Pennsylvania. She started to illustrate books in 1979 and is probably best-known for her collaboration with Hugh Lewin on the JAFTA books. She works with children of all ages, talking about book illustration and drawing, and with adults on the Third World and multi-cultural illustration.
