With Aliens for Dinner , quirkily inventive, award-winning author of children's stories, Lesley Howarth, gives lovers of sci fi her first novel. Mathematically gifted, 10-year-old Sinclair is a great help to his parents who run the China House Takeaway. But things start going peculiar one day when, in a fit of boredom, he gives their pet fish, Daisy, a whirl in the faulty old microwave. There's a flash and before he can say Chop Suey, Sinclair finds he's dropped through a hole in the earth's magnetic field and for an uncomfortably long period of time (some 210 pages) he finds himself trapped in some unbrave new world and at war with horrible hostile aliens with double sets of teeth and green-blue leathery skins studded with spines who, disguised as people, spend all their uncaged moments seeking out humans for their breakfast, lunch and dinner. Trouble is, the humans want to eat the aliens as much as the aliens want to eat them! A must-read for 10-year-old lovers of the weird, the wonderful and the unexpected. (Ages 10 and over) -- Tamsin Palmer
