With her parents' bodies still warm in the ground, Alice Deane is whisked away by her aunt to be taught how to be a witch. Alice isn't happy about this - and who would be, with her aunt's brain guzzling familiar, Spig, out to get her? It soon becomes clear that one of them will have to go, and so Spig and Alice's bitter rivalry plays itself out to a gruesome end . . .
