When David Webster went to study anthropology at a university in South Africa, he started to look at things with new eyes. He became respected academic in the field of social anthropology and played a key role in bringing about change in South Africa. He became an authority on the apartheid government's use of repression and "death squads" to counter the anti-apartheid movement. In 1989, David Webster was gunned down, in front of his house. At the time of publication in1997, the Truth and Reconciliation commission's investigation into David's death had resulted in his suspect killer being arrested and charged with murder.
