Author Harvey Kidder, a resident of Westchester County, New York, originally wrote The Kids' Book of Chess for his son. Illustrator Kimberly Bulcken Root is a graduate of Parsons School of Design. She made her picture book debut with A Bed for the Wind. Her illustrations have appeared in The Nation, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal. She and her husband, the illustrator Barry Root, live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jeanne Whitehouse Peterson writes stories and poems for young people that reflect a deep interest in family, community, language, and culture. Her previous picture books include My Mama Sings, Sometimes I Dream Horses, and the Reading Rainbow book I Have a Sister -- My Sister is Deaf, which has been in print for more than twenty-five years. She lives with her husband, David Kammer, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Deborah Kogan Ray has illustrated many books for children. She lives in Philadelphia, PA.
