The big day has finally arrived! It's Shyanna's thirteenth birthday, the most important birthday in a mermaid's life. Shyanna will get her legs and be able to go on land for the first time ever! But her excitement quickly fades when Cora's sister, Jewel, gets stuck in a fisherman's net. Will Jewel be saved? And if so, at what cost to the other mermaids?

Janet Gurtler has written numerous well-received YA books. Mermaid Kingdom is her debut series for the middle-grade market. She lives in Calgary, Alberta, near the Canadian Rockies, with her husband, son, and a chubby Chihuahua named Bruce. Gurtler does not live in an Igloo or play hockey, but she does love maple syrup and says "eh" a lot. Katie Wood fell in love with drawing when she was very small. Since graduating from Loughborough University School of Art and Design in 2004, she has been living her dream working as a freelance illustrator. From her studio in Leicester, England, she creates bright and lively illustrations for books and magazines all over the world. Caroline Plaisted worked in publishing for several years before becoming a full-time writer, and is published by Bloomsbury, Simon and Schuster, Piccadilly Press and Scholastic. She was born and brought up in London and now lives in Ashford, Kent. Katie Wood graduated from Loughborough University School of Art and Design and has been living her dream working as a freelance illustrator. She creates illustrations for books, magazines and greetings cards all over the world.
