I shall always remember the year 1887 for it was the year of the Old Queen's Jubilee - the year I went out into service. I was just past my tenth birthday by then...Of course, I cried when I left home...but I was the eldest and there wasn't any room for me any more.' Nan, the 'strong and willing girl' in these stories, went as a small girl to work in domestic service. Though being a maidservant was a hard life, Nan was clever at it - she knew all sorts of things we've forgotten nowadays: how to make sand-soap for scouring wooden floors, how to chalk a front doorstep so it dried up all white... And she enjoyed life enormously, finding fun wherever she could and always standing up for herself: to big, rough boys, to spiteful young ladies - and to her employers! Full of down to earth humour and vitality, this is a high-spirited, funny and touching book, to be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
