Call of the Wild
Stolen from his pampered life on a Californian estate and shipped to the Klondike to work as a sledge dog, Buck triumphs over his circumstances and becomes the leader of a wolf pack. The story records the 'decivilisation' of Buck as he answers 'the call of the wild', an inherent memory of primeval origins to which he instinctively responds.

White Fang
Life is hard and dangerous for both people and animals in the frozen Canadian North. For a wolf like White Fang it is a continuous fight to find food. When White Fang meets the people of the North - first Indians and then White Men - he learns to live with them like a dog. But some men are cruel to their dogs and others are kind. Will White Fang's life be any easier now? Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the dog, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption. This classic story is a companion novel to London's 'The Call of the Wild', which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild.

Penguin Readers is a series of simplified novels, film novelizations and original titles that introduce students at all levels to the pleasures of reading in English. Originally designed for teaching English as a foreign language, the series' combination of high interest level and low reading age makes it suitable for both English-speaking teenagers with limited reading skills and students of English as a second language. Many titles in the series also provide access to the pre-20th century literature strands of the National Curriculum English Orders. At the end of each book there is a section of exercises focusing on vocabulary building, comprehension, discussion and writing. Penguin Readers are graded at seven levels of difficulty, from 'Easystarts' with a 200-word vocabulary, to Level 6 (Advanced) with a 3000-word vocabulary. In addition, titles fall into one of three sub-categories: 'Contemporary', 'Classics' or 'Originals'.
