Great for age 3-9 years
This picture book is about a walk in the jungle with a small girl and boy. Wild things lurk in the shadows, among the trees: a snake; a troop of chimpanzees, a cockatoo and tigers. You can't actually see them, because wild things like to hide and take you by surprise, but they are there. You have to sneak quietly beneath the vines, creep silently among the undergrowth and watch where you put your feet there may be a crocodile behind that log! Now you arrive at the clear pool where the gentlest animals come to drink you can see them reflected in the water. But don't turn or look up, or you will frighten them away. Sense them gathering in their dozens and their hundreds behind you. When they've gone, you somehow sort of know...Walking back, the path seems shorter and coming out of the silent jungle into the open, you suddenly feel like running, jumping, crashing, thumping, stamping down and dancing round and shouting! Judy Hindley also wrote "A Piece of String", "The Wheeling Whirling-around Book", "One by One", "Big and Little", "Crazy ABC" "Isn't It Time?" and "The Big Red Bus".
