It all starts when the narrator of this story goes to the zoo with his mum. "Can we have a zoo in our house?" he asks. "Certainly not," says Mum. But, next thing you know, the boy is writing a letter to the zoo and on Monday a giraffe is eating in the kitchen! On Tuesday a hippopotamus is splashing in the bath, on Wednesday a monkey is swinging in the hall, on Thursday a crocodile is washing in the garden, on Friday a lion is sleeping in the living-room and on Saturday all the animals come and have a party. On Sunday Mum sends them back to the zoo and sits down in relief, mess all around her. But she forgets about the gorilla, hiding under a table! Andy Cooke has illustrated numerous books for children, including "Wonderful Robert and Sweetie-pie Nell" (by Diana Hendry), "The Terrible Troll" (which he also wrote) and many educational titles. This book has been tested and approved by top readability consultants Cliff Moon and Jill Bennett. "A Zoo In Our House" takes the days of the week as the basis for a sequential tale, emphasizing the link between words and pictures: the reader can check his or her prediction with what is happening in the illustrations.
