Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author and poet, most famous for his writing down of many timeless, classic fairy tales. He is Denmark's most famous author and his birthday is celebrated every year with a part called "Odin Story Day". John Matthews is an Arthurian expert and professional storyteller. He is the author of numerous highly acclaimed books on Arthurian legends and Celtic mythology, and was historical advisor for Touchstone Pictures during the making of King Arthur (2004). John has written many books for Barefoot including The Barefoot Book of Knights (PB with CD: 9781841480169). He lives in Oxford. Pavel Tatarnikov lives in Belarus but spent a year in England whilst illustrating Ar thur of Albion. At the age of eleven, he was selected to train at the State School of Music and Fine Arts in Minsk, Belarus. He has been a member of the Belarusian Artists Union since 1997 and is now an illustrator in the Graphic Department of the Belarusian Academy of Arts. This is his first project with Barefoot Books.

The Snow Queen
When Kay is cursed by a magic mirror, he can no longer perceive goodness in anything - not his best friend Gerda, nor the roses in the garden. One wintery evening, he is kidnapped by the wicked Snow Queen and swept away to live for ever in her kingdom of ice. Gerda must travel through inhospitable and frozen lands, sustained only by the kindness of strangers, in order to find her beloved friend. And when she gets there, she must melt the ice in his heart before she can take him back home.
