An unusual, comic school story about a girl with magical powers. Esmeralda's mother is the fortune-teller, Madame Petulengro. Esmeralda has magical powers too. She thinks she should use them to do good. Her mum says she should behave herself and stop causing trouble. But Esmeralda can't let Brian Biggard get away with being such a big head, can she?
