The Princess and the Goblin Princess Irene lives in a castle in the mountains. A subterranean army of goblins is planning to storm the castle. To defeat them, Irene enlists the help of Curdie, a miner boy, and her mysterious great-great-grandmother, who secretly lives in the castle tower. Prince Prigio Cursed with being smarter than everyone else, Prince Prigio is disliked by all. Finding himself alone and friendless, he sets out to prove himself to the world by saving the kingdom from monsters. He succeeds and the more humble Prigio is finally accepted. Prince Ricardo continues the story, following the adventures of Prigios son, Prince Ricardo.The Wise Woman and Other StoriesWriting not for children but for the childlike, this fairy tale was one of MacDonalds most popular works. The story recounts how a woman of mysterious powers visits two young girls: one a princess, the other a shepherds daughter. Startling events result in fantastic fairy-worlds in which the girls must choose between good and evil.

Andrew Lang was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, as well as a well-known collector of fairy tales. He was born in Selkirk, Scotland. Throughout his lifetime, he wrote, edited, collected, or contributed to more than 150 works, most notable of which are his Fairy Books. He died on July 20th, 1912, at age 68. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish poet and writer of fiction.
