The Only Day-Girl includes a good measure of life saving and other events, but the main thrust of the book is the friendship between the heroine Anne Jacobina (A J) and Susanne (Sadie). Both girls are outsiders, A J because she is a day girl in a boarding school and Sadie because she is blind. Dorothea Moore deals very sensitively with Sadie's disability, making her a worthy chum for A J. The author herself was lame, and this probably helped her to portray Sadie. The book also gives us the friendship between the junior, A J, and the much admired School-House Captain, Henry. This is an exuberant novel, featuring a school which 'gives so much' and 'asks so much'.
