Dodie Smith was born in 1896. She made her name as a playwright before moving to the US in the 1940s where she began writing novels including I Capture the Castle in 1948 and her best-known work, The Hundred and One Dalmatians, in 1956.

This book contains the following story:

101 Dalmatians
The dalmation dogs Pongo and Missus live with Mr and Mrs Dearly and their two nannies in a lovely house in Regent's Park. When Missus' litter of 15 puppies is stolen the two dogs suspect the evil Cruella de Vil is behind it. Pongo and Missus call upon the doggy network "The Starlight Barking" to locate the puppies and then set off to rescue them. On finding them they discover that Cruella has kidnapped a load of other puppies too in order to skin them and make dalmation fur coats. Pongo and Missus rescue the puppies and take them back home where Mr and Mrs Dearly promise to care for them all.
