John David Jackson was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 1940. He opened his own law practice in 1965, and through International Defence and Aid became involved in the 1965-6 political trials in the Eastern Cape. He built up a practice with a large black clientele, specializing in criminal work, and was eventually called to appear on behalf of some of the black students arrested during the 1977 period of unrest in Port Elizabeth. His success in defending these students led to harassment and threats from the authorities, he was called on to give evidence before the United Nations Ad Hoc Working Committee on Human Rights. John David Jackson and his family now live in England.
