In The Barefoot Book of Tropical Tales, Beninese storyteller Raouf Mama has brought together favorite myths and legends from all over the tropics. Many of these tales feature curious and resourceful animals, among them an ingenious goat from Haiti; a quarrelsome leopard from Zaire, and a cat and dog from Cape Verde. Of course, the archetypal rogue Anansi is also included, and this time he gets his comeuppance in the tale from Antigua. As well as his repertoire of animals, Raouf Mama introduces some memorable human characters, such as a wise village elder, Appuhami, from Sri Lanka; a Puerto Rican fisherman; and a mysterious old woman who lives in the depths of a river in the Benin. The music and rhythm of Raouf Mama's re-tellings make these stories hard to put down and impossible to forget. The lyrical text is enhanced throughout by Deirdre Hyde's rich, vibrant and witty illustrations. [This book description comes from a different edition of this title.
