Providing a core of material with text-based lesson plans and supporting photocopiable resources, this book for Year Two addresses a range of reading and writing, as well as key skills. It is devised purposely to resource only 50-60 per cent of the time allotted to the English curriculum, recognizing that teachers will want to personalize the programme with other tried-and-tested resources. Within each book of this series, material is organized term-by-term into teaching units that resource between 1 to 15 literacy hours. Each teaching unit has either a reading or a writing focus. However, the link between reading and writing is explicit and there is a strong emphasis on using quality literature (fiction, poetry and non-fiction), thus putting all work in context. Use of big books is a feature of the whole-class direct teaching sessions, with specific recommendations where appropriate. Speaking and Listening is integrated throughout, as is sentence level work (grammar and punctuation) and word level work (phonics, spelling and vocabulary).
