Start Reading is a new series of highly enjoyable books for beginning readers at KS1. They have been carefully graded to correspond to the Book Bands now widely used in schools. This enables readers to be sure that they choose books that match their own ability. There is very careful and gentle graduation from Band to Band. The books can be shared with an adult or read independently. They promote the enjoyment of reading through reading real, satisfying stories with a beginning, a middle and an end. Freddy's Family is at Book Band 4 in the Start Reading series. Freddy and his family have great fun- they go to the park, they play tricks on each other but sometimes they are very naughty...

This book features in the following series: Freddy's Family, Start Reading-Freddys .

This book is suitable for Key Stage 1. KS1 covers school years 1 and 2, and ages 5-7 years. A key stage is any of the fixed stages into which the national curriculum is divided, each having its own prescribed course of study. At the end of each stage, pupils are required to complete standard assessment tasks. This book is aimed at children in primary school. This book is at Book Band Blue. Once children can recognise 100 high frequency words, then it's time for Blue. Books at this level will start to become more complex and children will rely less on illustrations. The books in this band also teach children how to read with insight and will encourage them to read with expression. Pupil Targets: (i) choose books that they are interested in from the library, (ii) talk about a story in their own words, (iii) start to choose different books to read, (iv) don't always need pictures to help them understand a story, (v) notice and correct some of their mistakes, (vi) answer questions about the story to show a level of understanding, (vii) read words such as 'some', 'little', 'when', and 'out'. This book is part of a reading scheme, meaning that it is a book aimed at children who are learning to read. This reading scheme has multiple levels.
