"Gone-Away Lake" by Elizabeth Enright follows the adventures of two children, Portia and Jama, who discover a mysterious, abandoned lake and the remnants of an old, forgotten community during their summer vacation. While exploring, they meet eccentric, elderly inhabitants who share stories of the past and reveal the lake's history. As the children uncover secrets and forge friendships, they learn about the passage of time, the power of memory, and the importance of connection. The novel beautifully captures the innocence of childhood and the bittersweet nature of change and nostalgia in a charming, evocative narrative. She spent her childhood drawing pictures and created both art and story for her first book, Kintu: A Congo Adventure, published in 1935. She later decided that she preferred writing to illustrating and went on to write many enduringly popular books, including a series about the Melendy family in The Saturdays, three other novels, and two long fairy tales, Tatsinda and Zeee. She won numerous awards, including the Newbery Medal for Thimble Summer (1938) and a Newbery Honor for Gone-Away Lake (1957).
