This story is set in a small village in south Vietnam in 1967, at the height of the war. Thirteen-year-old Xuan is horrified when his village is destroyed in a bomb attack. He and his family are forced to make a dangerous journey through their war-torn country in the hope of finding sanctuary with his brother in Saigon. But their struggle soon turns to one of life and death as their arrival in the capital coincides with the Tet offensive.
