Great for age 11-14 years
This is a resource to develop the comprehension skills of lower ability students who are working towards Level 4 of the National Curriculum. It should help those students achieve Level 4 and tackle Key Stage 3 tests with confidence. Strategies help students approach a wide range of texts - including fiction, non-fiction, drama and poetry - while stepped activities give them essential practice in responding to the texts. Students are taught the general comprehension skills they need - such as how to differentiate between fact and opinion and how to read "between the lines". Students begin with extremely accessible texts and progress gradually to more demanding texts as their skills and confidence grow. Practice tests are provided with and without guidance on how to structure a response, to prepare students thoroughly for Key Stage 3 tests.
