The Railway Engine stories were written by the Reverend W Awdry for his son Christopher and, in Thomas and Diesel and the other titles in this format, the son has made sure that they, and the characters they introduced, remain popular with a new generation of readers. When Percy has to go away to be mended, the other engines are not pleased that his replacement is the mischievous Diesel. But when Thomas gets stuck, Diesel comes into his own. This large format, colourful adventure based upon the characters created by the Reverend W Awdry, is ideal for sharing with young readers. -- Philippa Reece
