Every nursery and reception class has a construction area which contains a variety of commercial construction kits, bricks and blocks. This book shows how such equipment can be used to inspire practical activities across the School Curriculum Assessment Authority's recommended Areas of Learning for under-fives. The activities are divided into six chapters which each cover one Area of Learning: language and literacy, mathematics, personal and social development, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development and creative development. Each activity will require a generic type of construction kit, such as one with wheels or bricks. There are photocopiable activity sheets providing extension and reinforcement ideas and an introduction which gives tips on observation, assessment, safety and making links with home.
