Edward Bilshen has chosen the extracts from Dicken's stories most likey to appeal to young readers, and his vivid commentary, interwoven with the extracts from the books, adds up to a picture of Dicken's life which is just as fascinating as his work.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic who is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. Edward Blishen was a recognised expert authority on children's literature. In 1970, he won the Carnegie Medal jointly with Leon Garfield for The God Beneath the Sea. He also compiled the acclaimed anthology, Children's Classics to Read Aloud, published by Kingfisher. Together with his wife Nancy he compiled several anthologies for Kingfisher, including The Kingfisher Treasury of Stories for Children. Edward Blishen died in 1996.
