Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic who is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. Linda Jennings was born in Sussex and began her career as a children's book editor. She has written over thirty children's books, many for Little Tiger Press. She now works as a freelance editor and writer, and lives in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, with her two cats. Alison Edgson was born in County Down in Northern Ireland. She studied Visual Communication at the University of Ulster in Belfast. She is currently living in France with her husband, two chocolate Labradors and a cat.

Raised by his brother and sister in law in humble circumstances, Pip aspires to a better life. When a mysterious benefactor provides the funds Pip sets off to the city to become a gentleman. However, the money cannot secure for him the girl he loves, and over time Pip realises that happiness must be found in the things he gave up in pursuit of a more sophisticated life.
